“Friends to lovers at its best– a sweet indulgence I couldn’t put down!” – R.S. Grey, USA Today Bestselling Author

Baking Me Crazy, the first in the romantic comedy Donner Bakery Series of standalones, from Karla Sorensen is available now!

20190718_DB01_Baking Me Crazy_Sorensen_KDP_FINAL

I’m Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family’s curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like well-armed soldier. She’s the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I’ve ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can’t.

Because when we met, she didn’t need true love. She needed a best friend. And that’s what I’ve been to her… for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can’t get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

‘Baking Me Crazy’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#1 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

About Karla Sorensen

Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

My Review…

I was so happy to be chosen to read some of the new stories from Smartypants Romance. And Karla Sorensen is totally new to me author.

Baking Me Crazy is a fantastic story! It brings heart, heat and as the character, Joy says “So romantic…”.

This is the story of Levi Buchanan and Jocelyn Abernathy.

First off, I want to say that this story flows beautifully into the fictional world of Green Valley that Penny Reid created.  I loved seeing characters from Penny Reid make an appearance and it didn’t distract from the main story at all! It brought a layer of believability to the story.  That the characters that Ms. Sorensen created belonged there.

I was intrigued by Jocelyn.  She has a disability and she doesn’t let it define her.  She has vulnerabilities that she can’t seem to shake and has defenses that would scare off most, but not her best friend Levi. I learned a little when reading about Joss, her disease and I was able to really empathize with what she was going through.

Oh and holy crow, Levi Buchanan and the curse!  I loved reading his POV’s and what really made me swoon was the comparisons that he made with Joss’s eye color…read this and you will melt too!  He was what Joss needed him to be when she needed him.  I love the best friends to lovers trope and this story knocked it out of the park.

Getting Played, a magnificent new romance by New York Times bestselling author Emma Chase is LIVE!

GP Cover.jpg

Dean Walker is all about keeping life simple. He’s effortlessly talented and intelligent—spending his summers playing drums in the local band and the rest of the year teaching high school in the same Jersey town where he grew up. He likes his love-life simple too, enjoying the commitment-free hook-ups his good looks and sexy charm have always made oh-so easy.

Then he meets Lainey Burrows. And his simple, easy life gets turned upside down.

***

One wild one-night stand was all it was ever supposed to be, so Lainey is shocked when she discovers that her sizzling summer fling is also her son’s new math teacher. But that’s nothing compared to the most unexpected twist of all—their hot hook-up left Lainey knocked-up, and now they’re about to become parents. Together.

What ensues is an addictive, insatiable, sweet and tender romance that won’t be simple, but it will be more than worth the fight.

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

My Review…

I have been a long time fan of Emma Chase…from Tangled till now…

Getting Played is the story of Lainey and Dean.

There are so many wonderful things about this story.  Ms. Chase has this amazing ability to write inner dialogue that is quick, hot and funny as hell.  Especially the hero’s POV.  Epically funny!

I like the fact that both Lainey and Dean are older, not fresh-faced but experienced in life.

Lainey was a young mom and now has a teenager.  She has a maturity to her and yet a winsomeness that can’t be defined.  She is also upfront about what she wants and what she needs.

Dean is such an enigma!  I loved all the facets of his character.  He was a player, he owned it and when it was time to step up and be the man he needed to be he did.

The secondary characters were as amazing as the main characters and brought so much more to the story!

The flow of this story is quick but still so full of character and life.  I love diving into Ms. Chase’s stories, the worlds she creates are fun, full of life and oh so swoony!

My Review…

“…Beth? Yeah, that’s what the men who loved her called her..”

I honestly could not put down this book until I finished it, and now I am wanting more!!

This is the first book in what is going to be an epic trilogy by Dylan Allen.

This is the beginning of the story of Elisabeth and Carter.

Elisabeth is trying to be what her family demands of her.  She has been the victim of unspeakable horrors and yet she finds a way to downplay them or blames herself for them!  My heart bleeds for this character!

Carter is struggling to find his place in the world, he too has been dealt with some revelations that have rocked him and he is trying to process this.

The world that Ms. Allen creates, the words she uses to paint the pictures is phenomenal! You are going to get your heart broken in this story, I cried and I felt anger for the injustices that have been done.  I am cheering so hard for both Elisabeth and Carter.

You are going to be submerged in this story, in the town of Winsome and the lives of both Carter and Elisabeth.  This story is just the beginning, and how this story ends just wow!

If you haven’t read Dylan Allen’s stories before, do yourself a favor and GET THIS BOOK!! You will not be sorry and you will fall in love (and hate) with the characters and the world she creates!

My Review…

Cupids Series…

Another cute, funny and steamy story by Ms. Lila Monroe!

This is Natalie and Justin’s story.

I always enjoy Ms. Monroe’s heroines, and Natalie is nothing short of fantastic.  She is smart, sassy and I love how she sticks up for things and people that she cares about! Her chance encounter with Justin is sweet, funny and steamy!  A great meet-cute and what a way to start her story.

Justin is struggling to find his place in the world.  He wants to blaze his own trail and with his last name and legacy, it’s hard to come by.  Meeting Natalie gives him the push he needs.

You also get the humor you come to love from Ms. Monroe, I caught myself laughing out loud at the dialogue and antics that her characters do and say.

I also liked seeing past characters make appearances and catching up with what’s going on with them.

Another hit, another jewel in the writing crown of Lila Monroe.  Well done!

“Tell me a happy something, Sutton.”

I was only seven the first time Grady Bowen whispered those words to me. Cloaked by the black sky under a blanket of stars, it was easy to get lost. He didn’t have any good memories of his own, and needed to borrow mine. I’d willingly give him anything.

Being infatuated with that boy was a beautiful curse. What could have been special didn’t get the chance to bloom. He’d never see me as more than his best friend’s kid sister. That was a hard lesson to learn, but not the most difficult.

Grady had always been struggling against the odds. Eventually he quit fighting and let his family’s reputation own him. Try as I might, those influences were beyond my reach.

He didn’t mean to break my heart. Or maybe he did. I shouldn’t have made it so easy for him. Either way, our wrongs against each other carved new lines between us.

I went four years without seeing Grady—each one more painful than the last. That distance did nothing to dull my feelings toward him. But things are different now. Most noticeably is Grady. I barely recognize this man he’s become. And that’s the way he intends to keep it. Not that it really matters.

Grady Bowen stopped being my happy something long ago.

My Review…

A Cocky Suits Novel

What an intro to a new series by these two!

Cocky Playboy is the story of Decker and Tate.  Two high powered attorneys forced to work the big deal together.

I have to give props to these two gentlemen.  First off, the alternate POV’s were phenomenal! I don’t know who wrote which character but the flow of the story is seamless!

Second, the chemistry of this story is off the charts hot and boy the dirty talk was on point!

Next, let’s talk about Tate, this woman is all sorts of fierce and she doesn’t back down for anything! I like her take charge attitude and I applaud the way the softness of her character showed at the end.

Decker, wowza what an alpha!  He is the king of compartmentalizing! But when things start blending, he rises to the challenge and brings the sweetness with the bossiness!

I am looking forward to the next stories in this series!! Get your hands on this!

Excerpt

“A junior invited me,” Megan said excitedly. “It might be the party of the year.”

Party?

It looks like Union Square during New Year’s Eve.

What is everyone waiting for?

This party wasn’t worth the three-mile walk from our dorm to here.

The cheap alcohol tops it all. I didn’t get drunk with the first sip of a screwdriver; I got a massive headache. This isn’t for me. The circle of girls gossiping about everything as they wait to be swooped by some guy—not my scene.

Haven’t we done this for the past twelve hours? Chat about nonsense. This is why I don’t have many friends. I was too busy with my extracurricular activities that I skipped socializing 101. Give me a good book to read. A movie to watch or a marathon on TBS or Nick at Nite to keep me up all night. I suggest we leave, and what does roommate-dearest say in response? “I’ll find you a place to crash.”

The bedroom is dark but clean. I grab a sweatshirt and even a bear I find on the floor. It only takes a few seconds for me to fall asleep. It is quiet, smells of sandalwood and pine, and the sheets are soft.

I miss home.

Everything is going well until the guy from the coffee shop wakes me up. I swear it feels like a dream. A nightmare. But after we talk, I realize he’s not as bad as I thought. He’s one of the good guys but likes to pretend he’s anything but.

His food…who knew eggs could taste this great? In exchange for yet another plate, I could offer to fix the light fixtures. This place is off code.

And there I go, thinking like my father. Instead of teaching me construction, he should’ve taught me how to socialize. I wish my aunts had been around more often during my teenage years. I’d be a little cooler, or at least I’d know how to make friends easily.

Auggie takes the empty plate from my hands and offers me some milk. I nod, that sounds better than whatever they’re serving upstairs.

“It must be hard moving away from all your friends and family,” he says.

I shrug and smile. I don’t make friends easily. Well, actually, I don’t make friends at all. Dad and I have always been on the run. Running to school, running to a construction site, running to tae kwon do, running to the grocery store…

There’s never time to exchange more than a greeting and a weak how are you before I have to go again.

During my spare time I help Dad around the house or at work. If I do the latter, it pays for my knickknacks, and I get to spend time with him.

“It’s just Dad and me,” I remind him.

“Any other family?”

“Mom’s family faded away after she died. Dad’s sisters stepped up, but now they have their own families, so during my teenage years it was just the two of us.” I drink some of the milk he poured me.

“Grandparents?”

“How about you?” I fire back without answering his question. And study him.

He’s not as bad as I thought earlier. In fact, he’s very nice. And good looking. Tall, mussed-up, dark hair, hazel eyes. Black t-shirt hugging his lean and defined muscles. There’s a playful tug at the corner of his mouth, and I see a dimple forming on the left side of his cheek.

He turns me on, but he’s he and well, I’m me.

My Review…

This story is truly the art of the slow burn.

This story takes place over 12 years, but the flow and the rhythm of this story is beautifully done!  The characters are so well written that you feel like you truly know them.

This is the story of Auggie and George, this is their story of friendship that is honest and true and not always hearts and flowers.  They meet in college and they grow together and sometimes apart over the years.  I loved how their friendship trumps everything.  I admired how both Auggie and George only wanted each other’s happiness even at the expense of their own feelings.

I was rooting for them throughout the story, I was also wanting to shake both of them at times and tell them to see what is right in front of them. But it took years and growth, on both their parts, to finally realize what their friendship truly was!

Family means everything to these two and I loved how even the secondary characters play such a phenomenal role in this story.

Ms. Burgoa never fails to amaze me with her writing talents!  This is such a well rounded, well-written story about the true meaning of friendship and family.

Excerpt

My back landed on the bed, my legs still locked around Lucas’ waist. It meant that he landed on top of me, and rather than feeling the weight of him, I felt only the press of his cock from behind the sweatpants he’d pulled on after our earlier shower.

“Lose the pants,” I panted, pulling back from the kiss that had seen us from the kitchen table back to the bedroom.

“In a second,” he muttered in reply, kissing me again, the faint taste of me still lingering on his lips. “First, gotta finish what I started.”

He gripped my calves, using his hold to unhook my legs from around him, and slid down the bed until his face was at my center once again. “You’re beautiful, you know that?” He looked up at me, sincerity in his eyes, and I couldn’t have stopped from smiling at him if I’d wanted to.

“Thank you,” I whispered, wanting him to know that I heard his words, I felt them, I appreciated them. But I also wanted him to know I was done with waiting. “Make me come, Luc. Please.”

“Begging, baby? You don’t need to do that.” He turned his attention back to my pussy, his hand coming up to press against my one thigh, widening my legs for him. “Such a pretty pussy. I knew it would be. Didn’t I say it would be?”

I moaned, thinking about the dirty words he’d whispered in that bathroom, how he’d promised me he’d look his fill before he put his mouth on me. Laid out like I was, I could feel the burn of his eyes on my most intimate place and it felt so good. So good. I’d never really been one to like being watched during sex. With Mason, as good as it had been, especially early in our relationship, it had lacked the intensity I felt just from Lucas’ gaze on me.

Don’t think about him now, I angrily instructed my wayward mind, hating that my ex had suddenly, somehow intruded on this moment. “Lucas.” I said his name to remind myself where I was, where I wanted to be—in this bed with a man I might not know well but felt connected to by a hundred tiny and inexplicable threads.

This is crazy came the reply from the sensible part of my brain. It was the part that had been controlling my thoughts and actions for a long-damn-time, and the part that I wanted to use this trip to Australia to cast back.

I didn’t want to always be sensible. To be the girl that used logic to hide away from truths that were too difficult to confront.

I wanted to be this girl who was spread out on the plain black comforter of Lucas Hawke’s bed, telling him to “lose the pants.”

“Come back to me, pretty girl.” His voice intruded on my runaway thoughts—thank god—and the minute my eyes locked back on him, his tongue swept across my swollen clit. His hands were splayed on my thighs, his thumbs spreading me open, and as he licked at me, I rolled my hips wanting more.

Needing more.

He turned his head quickly, and before I even had the chance to moan my disapproval, I felt the bite of his teeth on my thigh. My little “Oh” got louder when he whipped his head to the opposite side and did the same, except harder, longer.

I laughed, remembering his words on the plane. “I’m obsessed with the idea of sinking my teeth into you.

“Laughing at me?” he asked, looking up at me, his breath brushing across my exposed clit, and making me shiver. “That might get you punished.”

I shook my head, and pouted, hoping I looked as sexy as I felt with his big body between my legs. “Not laughing at you.” I waited a beat, pondering his threat, then asked, “What’s my punishment?”

Instead of answering me with words, he answered me with his actions, using his tongue on me to bring me to edge time and time again. His fingers, when he brought his hand up to thrust two inside me, pressed repeatedly and deliciously on that spot which made my legs shake involuntarily. He moved my body, spreading my legs, throwing them over his shoulders, and, finally, gripping my waist after withdrawing his hand and mouth from between my legs, to flip me over until I was on all fours in front of him.

“This arse. Fuck.” His hand came down in a swift slap that jolted me forward and made me cry out. “Too hard?” His voice softened with the question, caring infused in his tone that told me he wasn’t as out of control as he seemed.

“No, I just wasn’t expecting it,” I assured him, turning my head so I could look at him over my shoulder and give him a smile that promised I wanted everything he was giving me.

He stopped, holding stock still on his knees on the bed behind me. His hand came up to my ass cheek and stroked it gently, the soft touch a stark, arousing contrast to the smack he’d just given me. Then, he moved around my body, falling down to lay stretched out beside me, and whispered, “I wasn’t expecting you.”

Talon Gold is a lot of things: good at football, bad at love. Obsessed with scoring, refuses to play by the rules. Cruel. Relentless. Brilliant. Intoxicatingly attractive.

Despite his demanding reputation and propensity for being the most arrogant a-hole ever to strut Pacific Valley University’s picturesque campus, everyone wants a piece of him: coaches, scouts, and pretty little campus fangirls with pouty lips and perfect top knots.

But Talon … he only wants a piece of me.

And four straight years of infuriating rejection means I’m almost positive he’d take a night with me over a national championship trophy.

But I’m no fool—he only wants me because he can’t have me. And with graduation approaching, time is running out. He’s more desperate than ever, pulling out all the stops and doing everything in his power to get in my good graces.

They say, “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.”

But to that I say, “Why not both?”

I have my reasons …

Sorry, BMOC. This victory? Not going to happen.

“Irie, right?” Talon’s long legs stretch wide, pushing into my space, his expensive sneaker stopping two inches from my knock-off Golden Goose sneakers.

Cute.

He’s pretending like he might not know my name. He’s pretending like he hasn’t been trying to hook up with me since the fall semester of our freshmen year when I got roped into attending a party at some beer-scented three-story on frat house row and he cornered me the way a mountain lion corners prey, carefully stalking me first from all angles then making smooth and deliberate moves until he positions himself to go in for the kill.

Fortunately for me, his hunting skills were still in need of some fine-tuning back then.

I got away.

And I’ve gotten away every time since.

The auditorium hums with small talk. My body hums with electric amusement. Over the years, this has become a sort of game between us. Cat and mouse. Offense and defense. He’s tried every strategy in the book, but I’ve managed to stick to the one that always works—cold, coy, aloof, and uninterested.

“All right, dudes and dudettes,” the professor rests his hands on his hips, rocking back and forth on his heels as he scans the room. “I’m Dr. Longmire, but you can call me Rich if you want.”

The girl to my left giggles to her friend. “He’s not a regular professor, he’s a cool professor.”

“Welcome to Anthro 101.” Dr. Longmire—Rich—twists the shark tooth necklace that hangs on a leather cord down his tanned chest as he paces the room. “We meet Mondays and Wednesdays from eight to nine with recitation on Fridays. You should have received your syllabus in your email over the weekend. If you need a paper copy, I’ve got a few on the desk up here. That said, I’ve been asked to remind you all that PVU is striving to become a paperless university. Please only print things when absolutely necessary.”

One student gathers his things in a hurry and dashes out the side door. He’s probably in the wrong classroom. It happens and it’s no big deal, but it doesn’t stop a group of meatheads in the corner from finding it hilarious and yelling out, “Loser!” just before the door swings shut.

Professor Longmire cracks a joke about how he doesn’t usually scare people off until after he goes through his entire spiel.

No one laughs.

“You have a good winter break?” Talon asks me, leaning close and keeping his voice low. He’s trying to feign intimacy, trying to act like we’re more than the acquaintances we’ve only ever been. Smooth. But I see through it.

“The best,” I lie, sparing him the details before pointing at the front of the room. “If you don’t mind …”

His heavy stare weighs on me, and a blanket of heat covers my skin in the seconds before the steady trot of my heart turns into an all-out gallop.

This happens every time—the ongoing war between my mind and body every time he comes around.

I’d be lying if I said his attention didn’t flatter the hell out of me. I mean, come on. I’m only human—a mere mortal myself. I just happen to have a hell of a lot more self-control than the average SoCal blondie strutting PVU’s seaside campus. I appreciate the attention, but by no means am I naïve enough to think there’s anything special about it.

Talon wants to screw me.

And he only wants to screw me because he can’t.

Nothing more, nothing less.

“Hey. You have a spare pen?” Talon asks with zero shame, his cinnamon-scented whisper tickling my eardrum.

Dipping down into my bag, I retrieve a hot pink gel pen and hand it over without so much as making eye contact.

From my periphery, I watch as he examines it for a second before his full lips mouth a quick thank you. The garish color doesn’t seem to faze him, doesn’t so much as threaten his jock itch masculinity.

He flips to a clean page in his notebook and concentrates on the screen ahead.

“Now, I’ve been teaching here for over thirty years,” Professor Longmire prattles on as he paces the front of the room. “I’ve been around long enough to know that these eight AM Monday classes are a pain in the you-know-what. I know not everyone is going to go to every single class. I know that there’ll be times you’re hung over or you over-sleep or what have you. Don’t email me. Don’t send me your sob story or made up excuses. I don’t want to hear it. Now some of the younger professors, they post lecture notes on the class website. But I don’t have time for that. So here’s what you’re going to do. Everyone’s going to have an accountability buddy.”

A what …?

“I want you to each to turn to someone next to you,” he says. “That person is going to be your go-to when you need a copy of lecture notes. That person is also going to be your study partner. Their success is your success and vice-versa. Just because this is Anthro 101 doesn’t mean it’s an easy class. In fact, a quarter of you will drop out before the end of the semester, and the majority of you probably won’t walk out of here with A’s.”

Two people—a guy and a girl from opposite ends of the room—gather their bags and show themselves out, heads tucked.

“Aaaand there we go. That’s when I usually scare them away.” Longmire laughs at his own joke before scanning the audience. “Anyway, I’ll give you all a moment to find your partner. Don’t make a big deal of it, don’t overthink it. Just pick someone—anyone—close by.”

I gather a sea-salted lungful of air and take in my surroundings. The two girls beside me are clasping their hands together like a couple of junior high besties. The guys in the row ahead are already exchanging phone numbers, as are the guy and girl to their right. Within seconds, I surmise that everyone else around me seems to be spoken for—everyone, that is, except Talon.

Straightening my shoulders, I angle my body toward Talon and maintain a neutral expression.

The moment our eyes catch, he bites his lower lip and flashes a cockeyed smirk. “Guess it’s us.”

My stomach somersaults, but I play it cool. “Lucky me.”

“Yeah.” He laughs through his nose, his perfect white teeth flashing as he grins. “Lucky you.”

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she’d be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart . . . except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances—because nothing is beyond his control—is Billy’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, he’d be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable . . . except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

‘Beard With Me’ is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

*Scarlet*

“Do you want me to leave?”

Yes. That would be best, a wise voice said between my ears.

So of course I inhaled deeply and said as calmly as I could manage, “I thought we were going to go get firewood.”

“Okay. Good.”

“But then,” I blurted, flustered and irritated with myself for not speaking wisdom, “You should go. You can’t tell me carting firewood back and forth between your house and here is how you want to spend the last of your Thanksgiving weekend.”

“I didn’t say it was.” He began making his way up the incline.

“But you just said—”

“How about we make a deal.” Billy dropped the kindling next to my little woodpile, dusting his hands off on his pants. “I’ll cart the firewood, and you sing.”

“You want me to serenade you while we carry firewood?”

He smiled, slow and easy as he walked to me and reached out his hand. On autopilot, I accepted it and allowed him to help me up.

As soon as I was standing, his gaze moved from my hairline down to my nose, lips, and then chin, saying quietly, “I’ll take a serenade from you anytime.”

Thunk ka-thunk. That was my heart. It had been doing the thunk ka-thunk quite a lot around him. I ignored it, because what else could I do?

“And you’re not carrying the wood.” He tugged on my hand, pulling me out of my daze and past my tent.

“I will too carry wood.” Struggling to find my bearings, I stumbled after him. “I can carry logs just fine.”

“You’ll carry a log.” Billy fit his fingers between mine, pressing our palms together and grinning at me like he was waiting for me to argue and he couldn’t wait.

Snapping my mouth shut, I glared at him.

“Nothing to say?”

Maintaining my glare, I walked next to him. I wasn’t being led anywhere I didn’t wish to go. Not anymore. He wasn’t talking me into anything else.

“That’s an awfully mean look, Scarlet.” His grin grew, his brutally attractive eyes glowing happily as he peered down at me.

“Well, you deserve it. Always trying to tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m not arguing with you about this. I’m carrying as much wood as I want and you can take your stupid, chauvinistic opinions and shove them up your pretty-boy ass.”

Goodness. Where had that come from?

Billy’s steps faltered and his mouth fell open, his eyebrows rising high on his forehead. He stared at me, looking shocked as hell. And then in the next moment, he threw his head back and laughed. But he did not let go of me, instead bringing my knuckles to his chest as his deep, rumbly laughter filled the empty spaces between the trees, surrounding us.

Crushing me.

Yes. I was well and truly crushed as I could only watch Billy Winston laugh, desperately basking in the image of him so delighted and relaxed. I had the odd sense that his laughter also filled the empty spaces inside of me, the neglected, vacant rooms, and even a few places that felt brand-new, like he’d created them.

All that noble honesty he carried around like a boulder abruptly lifted, revealing him. Just him. Carefree and young and happy. Someone he might’ve been if his burdens hadn’t been so heavy, his responsibilities so broad.

It lasted only a minute, maybe two, maybe less, but I had the sense of being caught afterward. Billy’s laughter had receded, but he’d spun a web while I’d been staring at him, holding his hand.

His grin became smaller and he bit his bottom lip, his gaze dropped to my mouth. “You think I’m pretty?”

“You know you’re pretty,” I said, bizarrely out of breath, rattled, needing to anchor my focus to a tree beyond him and waging war against the heat climbing up my neck to my cheeks. Oddly, my eyes stung. I blinked.

His attention was still on me. I felt it, but I didn’t dare look at him. I couldn’t handle one of Billy Winston’s intense stares right now. He’d probably use my scattered wits to his advantage, talk me into something I shouldn’t want to do, and then I’d be kicking myself later.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice deep with concern, all trace of his earlier humor gone.

I huffed, trying half-heartedly to steal my hand back from him. He didn’t let it go, instead taking my tugging as a signal to step closer, filling my vision.

“Scarlet—”

“Are you ever going to teach me how to play the guitar?” I closed my eyes.

He didn’t answer right away, and I felt him hesitate, his mind work before he muttered, “It’s only been a week.”

A quality to his voice made me think he wasn’t answering the question I’d asked, but rather he was reminding himself that it had only been a week since we’d struck the deal.

Was that only last week? Why does it feel like so much has changed?

Then he said, “Don’t be angry.”

“I’m not angry.” I was muddled, my head and heart hurt, I was incredibly confused, but I wasn’t angry.

The air shifted and I felt him move closer. A second later, the fingers of his free hand were at my ear, tucking my hair behind it, his fingertips lingering at my neck, sending wave after wave of goose bumps every which way. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t swallow. I couldn’t think. Every nerve in my body strained toward him and I didn’t understand it. What is happening?

“Have you ever been kissed, Scarlet?”
